Lodge. Dated 1873. For James Ramsden; extended 1976. Half-timbered on red sandstone plinth, red tile roof. 2 storeys. Gable-fronted with side wing on left and porch under catslide roof in angle; C20 addition on right. Transomed casements with small, leaded panes; pargetted panels with flowers, leaves and date. Front gable has a canted-bay window of 1:4:1 lights under moulded bressumer; coved eaves to hipped roof broken by 2nd storey of bay which has a 5-light window beneath decorative bargeboard with pendant. Open-sided porch on left has turned balustrade and columns, ogee spandrels and integral front gate. Porch plinth and balustrade continue on left to link with ashlar gate pier having carved panel and ball finial. Door within porch has decorative ogee lintel. Lateral stack on right return has offset ashlar plinth and twin octagonal flues; matching ridge stack to rear. left return: coving to eaves of side wing and beneath a 4-light oriel window; pierced barge-board carved with vine trail. Built to serve Abbotswood (demolished) the home of James Ramsden, 1st Mayor of Barrow.
