Sheepwash. Probably C17. Enclosure of Bembridge stone walls about 3 feet in height. On one side is a late C18 or early C19 horseshoe-shaped arch lined with 2 courses of brick voussoirs with some ironstone. On the other side is a narrow channel about 2 feet wide with grooves for gate. A sheepwash here is mentioned in 1640 in a survey of Swainston Manor and again in 1842 in a Tithe Commission Survey. In the middle of the C18 the owner of Westover tried to make the local farmers pay for its upkeep but they took him to court and won. The last sheep dip took place in 1975. A A rare survival.
