2.
Circa 1790 house built for the Director of the Low Moor Ironworks, later
subdivided. Two-storeys, sandstone "brick", principal front to east facing
garden. Rusticated quoins, prominent kneeler to gable end stone slate roof
with corniced chimneys. Three windows, symmetrical, plain raised surrounds to
outer windows but the central one on first floor has moulded architraves and
round arched head with keystone. Doorways in architrave surround with pediment.
Extension to north of mid C19 date, probably contemporary with subdivision.
Internally No 2 retains the original main staircase: open string with single
delicately turned balusters to each tread. Continuous moulded mahogany handrail,
scrolled to columnar newel at foot and ranged up flights. The ceiling of the
stair well has an oval framed by corn husk garlands. Drawing room has arched
niches flanking fireplace. No 1 has the former service stairs, also ramped
with plain turned balusters. Elevation to road has some square mullion
windows intact, one of 3 lights, and tall narrow stair light.
