Entrance lodge and gate piers to St
Joseph's College

Entrance lodge to Roman Catholic seminary with associated gate
piers and gates. c1880-1890. Rock-faced sandstone, slate roof,
wrought-iron gates. L-plan lodge on north side of drive. Very
plain Gothic style. Two storeys, with 2-bay crosswing to
right; with doorway in angle, tall 2-light sashed windows on
both floors, ridged gable copings with kneelers, and ridge
chimney. Two square gate piers with chamfered corners and
short octagonal upper stages with steep octagonal caps which
have pseudo-lucarnes. Double gates with 2 tiers of straight
bars divided by an ornamental band, and elaborate scrolled
cresting ramped up to the meeting.
