C18 [Possibly dating from the laying out of West Walks between 1702 and 1712].
Red brick with some Portland or Ridgeway hammer-dressed stone. Ramped at either
end.
West Walks, Colliton Walk, and Bowling Alley Walk were laid out and planted
with an avenue of trees between 1702 and 1712. They replaced the remnants
of the former Roman ramparts. Since at very nearly the same time Louis XIV
created the first of the Grands Boulevards in Paris by precisely the same means,
the Dorchester Walks must be regarded as one of the earliest Boulevards in England,
where such things are a rarity at any period.
Nos 1 to 6 (consec),including wall between Nos 5 and 6 form a group.
