Description

KIMBOLTON CASTLE GREEN
TL 095675
(EAST SIDE)
6/6 GATEHOUSE TO
24.10.51 KIMBOLTON SCHOOL
GV I
1764-66 by Robert Adam for fourth Duke of Manchester. Gatehouse
linked to two flanking pavilions by single storey ranges. Red
brick with Ketton stone ashlar. Re-roofed in 1858 with slate.
Symmetrical east and west elevations. Central semi-circular
headed archway with rusticated surround between two hung sashes
with glazing bars and Gibbs surrounds and divided by two engaged
Doric columns and two pilasters. Doric frieze with mutules
above triglyphs alternating with plain metopes and with guttae
below. Moulded cornice surmounted by balustrade, sealed above
archway. Panelled double doors with tradesman's door set in
one, having iron door knocker in form of lion's head mask.
Slightly recessed link ranges of three semi-circular headed bays
divided by pilasters. One hung sash with glazing bars to each
bay. Moulded cornice surmounted by parapet at lower level than
gatehouse and pavilions. Gable end pediments to pavilions.
Angle pilasters with similar Doric entablature flank semi-
circular headed bay with round headed niche and rusticated
surround. Interior. Archway has two original doors with six
raised and fielded panels to each. The Castle brewhouse was in
the north part of the Gatehouse. One brick vat is visible in
the north pavilion. The laundry was in the south part. A
rainwater head dated 1858 to an internal down pipe in the north
part is probably the date for the re-roofing of the gatehouse.
The C18 King post roof trusses are extant.
