Hotel 1897-99. Designed by Colonel R W Edis. Red brick with terracotta
dressings slated mansard roof. 8 storeys plus basement. 14 main bays.
Symmetrical composition. Centre 3 bays set forward slightly to full height,
with arched central entrance to ground floor set in pilastered surround.
Outer 3 bays to either side advanced to ground floor with arched loggias
sirmounted by balustraded balconies. Canted bay windows rising to full height
above second floor to first and third bays to either side, topped by Dutch
gables; centre bay similar windows to ground and first floors linked with
round heads. Segimental windows to second floor. Other windows mainly square
headed; terracotta architraves. Sashes glazing bars to upper lights. Square
central clock tower with domed 'pinnacles' to corners and openwork in on
finaial to roof. Several elaborate interiors remain, including the ground
staircase and entrance hall, dining rooms, etc.
