Methodist Chapel. Architect F J Commin, Engineer for reinforced concrete
work Paul Cottancin. Brick and reinforced concrete, some copper roofing. Large
square chapel rising through octagonal lantern to circular cupola, all in a rich
Edwardian Baroque style with Art Nouveau details and glass. Tripartite street
elevation [in 2 storeys] with deep entry, lefts, under oriel and pediment;
central lightly recessed with segmental pediment: brickwork is in stretched
bond, walls possibly cavity work (see Howard article, below), all details, surrounds,
cills etc., appear to be in cast concrete. 0n return, right, a second entry
with deep segmental hood, and attached at rear a school room or Sunday School with
lofty frontispiece crowned with broken pediment. The interior retains all
original fittings, including screen and doors near street entry, but this
moved forward, also pews, organ and organ-case pulpit, and holy fable. Lantern,
in reinforced. concrete with 'Palladin' windows, has 8 heavy pendants, and balcony front
with decorative pierced front.
An unusually rich and complete chapel on the large scale, made particularly
interesting because of early use of reinforced concrete for structure and details.
