Bank. c. 1885 by George Aitchison. Portland stone, slate roof. Late Italianate,
neo-Palladian style. Corner block with quadrant return to Admiralty Arch fore-
court. 3 storeys, with raised ground floor, and attic storey. 7 windows wide
symmetrical front to Whitehall with shallow 3 bay pedimented centre break and
slightly recessed quadrant corner of 5 bays terminating in porch in front of recessed
3-bay section. In antis porch with polished granite pilasters, entablature and balust-
traded parapet. Ground floor, with deep plinth and order of channelled, pedestalled
piers, has recessed square headed sashes under entablature. Upper floors have
architraved sashes, those on 1st floor with cornices and pediments in centre
break which has giant order of fluted Ionic pilasters; pediment in attic storey
contains wreathed oculus; the attic is channelled and articulated by squat fluted
pilasters; crowning cornice and balustraded parapet. Part of the formal approach
to Admiralty Arch with Reginald Blomfield's No 57 q.v. Drummond, however,
refused to have his bank remodelled in keeping with Blomfield's introduction to
Aston Webb's Victoria Memorial-Mall scheme.
