Main gateway, lodges and linking walls to Harewood House. c1802-4 based on a

and John Muschamp (mason) for Edward Lascelles, 1st Earl of Harewood. Large
finely-worked ashlar, roof not visible but probably lead, cast and wrought-iron
railings. 2-storey gatehouse linked by wall to single-storey lodges.
Gatehouse: 3 bays articulated by 4 giant Roman Doric engaged columns on blocks.
Plinth. Central tall semicircular archway, fluted impost band. Flanking bays
have arched sash windows set in semicircular-arched recesses with moulded impost
and architrave with rectangular plaques above. Doric entablature the soffit
carved with guilloche ornament. Casement-moulded cornice with carved soffit,
blocking course with central plaque and cornice. Simple wrought and cast-iron
gates from Chesterfield House, Mayfair (demolished c1936). Rear: same detail
as front. Interior of archway has to either side doorway with architrave, frieze
and cornice; 6-panel door; set in recessed bay of Doric columns distyle in antis.
Fluted frieze carried across from front. Vaulted ceiling coffered with carved
flower heads. Small square lodges front main road: sash windows to front and
inner returns flanked by Doric columns supporting triangular pediment with
continuous fluted frieze; blocking course and cornice. Doorways set in outer
returns hidden from view. Fronting roads attached short length of ashlar walling
with gate piers with casement-moulded cornice carried across wall with blocking
course. Gateway to left retains large double wooden doors with raised panels
in which are set cast-iron masks. Attached to rear of lodges short straight
section of wall with Doric entablature, cornice and blocking course with piers
surmounted by good carved urns with lower curving wall linking to gatehouse which
has simple iron railings closely set with arrow-head finials.
This gateway made the village the introduction to the house and replaced
Lofthouse Lodge (q.v.) as the main entrance.
