Studio-Stable Block
to Nuffield Lodge

Stable block converted to studio. c1824 by Decimus Burton (as part of
"politely" screened outbuilding group in relation to villa), altered and
enlarged as studio c1909 by Sidney Tatchell for the painter Sigismund Goetze
when owner of Grove House. Stucco, and red brick and pebble-dash with stucco
dressings for Tatchell's alterations; slate roofs. 1 and 2 storeys. Double
quadrant Burton facade towards villa with irregular and later fenestration but
some glazing bar sashes; cornice and blocking course. Lower 2 storey hipped
roof extension to south by Tatchell with pilastered segmental pedimented
doorway with side lights and 3-light casement over to Prince Albert Road; the
studio proper adjoining, facing road, with large semicircular arched studio
window with glazing bars, the head breaking through stucco entablature and
finished off with pediment-gable. Prominent, glazed hipped roof light. The
studio interior has classical stucco ornament and Ionic column screen to
fireplace recess.
