TG 51 SW WEST CAISTER CASTLE LANE

G.V. II*

House. Originally "C15 outbuildings to Caister Castle and possibly forms
remains of outer courtyard. Rebuilt 1830's. Brick and colourwashed brick.
Slate roofs. L plan. At south-west corner a 3 storey C15 drum tower. Entrance
doorway and C20 ground floor windows. Rectangular windows above to each floor
at erratic intervals. Parapet and flat C20 roof. Running north a C15 wing
greatly altered. 2 storeys. Doorway and one renewed cross casement each floor,
the lower of 3 lights, the upper of 2. Gabled roof with partly external north
gable end stack. Abbuting north again a 2 storey C15 brick structure standing
over segmental arch. Under this arch came barges bearing bricks and materials
for construction of castle. One rectangular window each floor above arch,
that to ground floor with ashlar surround. Gabled roof. Arch survives to
east side of building also. Main east wing C19. 2 storeys. 4 bay north
elevation. Bowed porch left of centre with panelled door and one C20 window
each side. 4-vaned fanlight over door. Brick doorcase carrying open pediment.
Windows are sashes with glazing bars beneath gauged skewback arches except
that in west bay of ground floor which is a cross casement. Gabled roof with
4 ridge stacks and modest cupola over door.
