Description

WHITESTONE NADDER LANE
SX 89 SE

4/123 Nadder Farm

- II

House. Circa late C17/early C18 with late C20 renovations. Whitewashed rendered
cob; slate roof gabled at ends; brick end stacks, the right-hand stack with 2 circa
late C17/early C18 brick chimney shafts.
2 room and through passage passage plan with 2 rooms heated from gable end stacks,
one on either side of a central passage with a late C19 stair inserted in the
passage. The left-hand room appears to be the hall/parlour, the right-hand room the
kitchen, although the latter is said to have had an oak plank and muntin screen
removed this century. C20 renovations have included converting a cider barn
adjoining the lower (left-hand) end of the house as part of the accommodation.
2 storeys. Irregular 3-window front with approximately central wide panelled front
door in old doorframe with timber spandrels. Fenestration of late C20 small pane
timber casements except for ground floor right which is a late C17/early C18 3-light
timber mullioned window, the mullions flush to the exterior, bead-moulded to the
interior.
Interior The left-hand room of the main range has a large fireplace in the angle of
the front and side wall with a chamfered cambered lintel, 1 brick and 1 stone rubble
jamb and the remains of a bread oven. The room has 1 circa late Cl7/early C18
massive chamfered cross beam and some late C20 replacement timbers. The right-hand
room fireplace has brecchia chamfered ashlar jambs and a chamfered timber lintel. A
roughly-chamfered cross beam may originally have been plastered over. The right-hand
first floor room has a circa late C17 brick fireplace with chamfered stopped brick
jambs and a narrow chamfered lintel-with small step stops. Roofspace not inspected
but the principal rafters appear to be straight and have been given additional
support.
A particularly interesting example of a late C17/early C18 2-room plan house with
some unusually early brickwork for a farmhuse of the region.
