HAWSTEAD
PLACE FARM
Barn, 60 metres south of Place Farmhouse
(Formerly listed as stable with Hawstead Place under General)
G.V.
II
Barn, C15. 3 bays, 1 aisle on south side. Timber-framed and weatherboarded.
Asbestos sheeted roof. Crown-post roof; square crownposts with spreading
bases, arch-braces up to collar-purlin and rising braces from tie-beam to post-
head. Slightly cambered tie-beam with massive arch-braces. Aisle tie-beams
jowled at junction with arcade-posts; reversed assembly at the eaves. Passing-
braces up from cill-beam to back of arcade-post head. Main doorway at east end
bay (there were probably at least 2 further bays at the east end until
C16/C17). Roof originally hipped at the west end and converted C17 to gable
with short clasped purlins. A section of early rendering on the north wall,
now within the adjoining barn, has a pargetted motif in high relief. The size
and quality of the original framing members are exceptionally high.
