SJ 45 NE GOLBORNE BELLOW C.P. GATESHEATH LANE
(East Side)

Farmhouse: late C17 origins, main fabric mid C18 with early C19
glazing and porch. Addition of early C20. Flemish bond orange brick
with buff stone dressings. Welsh slate roof with 5 brick chimneys, 1
lateral to rear. Double-pile plan. Main house has 3-storey
symmetrical 3-bay south front. Rusticated quoins, and moulded stone
cornice. End bays have 2-light iron casements with Gothick tracery
under channelled flat stone heads, and 3-light casements under similar
heads in top storey. Central bay has simple detached stone porch with
wooden doorcase with fluted pilasters and panelled reveals, containing
a 6-panelled door. Window with pointed head and tracery, and 2-light
casement above. Bay to left is C17 with English bond brickwork and
band at 1st floor. 3-light casements with applied Gothick glazing.
3-bay addition to left.
Interior: contains 2-room C17 layout with heavy chamfered ceiling
beams and central fireplace with wooden lintels. Softwood classical
semi-circular headed entrance to stairway with turned column mahogany
balusters. 6-panelled doors and an inscription EL 1711 (not original)
over a fireplace. Interesting shutters operated by sashes.
A former square dovecote with pyramidal roof has been incorporated
into the rear of the house as a bathroom.
