ENVILLE C.P. COTE LANE (south-west SO 88 NW side) 8/22 Lady Dorothy's Cottage II School now house. Dated 1755 with later alterations and additions. Perhaps by William Baker. Red brick with ashlar dressings; plain tile roof with coped verges; brick integral end stacks. 2 parallel ranges aligned north- south facing east. 2 storeys and gable-lit attic with ogee-moulded eaves band. 2 windows, small-pane casements with bracketed pediments. Central 6-panel door with bracketed pediment and keyed fanlight with radiating glazing bars. Single-storey, single-bay wings to left and right. Central datestone inscribed "This school/was/erected and endowed/by/LADY DOROTHY GREY/IN THE YEAR/1755". Rear. 2 storeys and attic with ogee-moulded eaves band and giant corner pilasters, crenellated parapets over pilasters and stepped up over central bay. 3 bays; central staircase window with raised keystone and lunette over, otherwise small-pane casements with bracketed pediments. Central 6-panel door with glazed top panels and raised keystone. Interior. Noted as having a dog-leg staircase with turned balusters. William Baker was at Enville in 1748 and was paid for plans in 1750; Lady Dorothy's Cottage has stylistic affinities with Woodhouse Farmhouse (q.v.), Stoke-upon-Tern C.P. North Shropshire District which was built by William Baker for Charles Pigot in 1754-6. Colvin p.84.
