Barracks canteen, now college function room. 1847, by Captain H James, RE. Brick with limestone rubbed brick headers, brick ridge stacks and slate hipped roof Single-depth plan. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, single storey wings; 7:3:7-window range. Symmetrical range with plinth and brick bracketed eaves cornice, plat band to projecting central range with round-arched doorways with plate-glass fanlights in the returns; full-width round-arched arcade with matching 6/6-pane sashes, and first-floor flat-headed sashes. Rear has central single-storey block with 3 pairs of half dormers and a ridge lantern. INTERIOR: Without special features. HISTORY: Built as part of HMS Vincent, a large Royal Marines barracks, the canteen is included as part of an advanced barrack design pre-dating post Crimean War reforms.
