Public house, former house. C17, early C18, C20. Timber-framed with brick in-
fill. Roof with half-hipped east end, clad with alternate bands of plain and shaped
tiles, probably re-used. Ridge stack. Core of building has lobby-entry plan.
North front: 1 1/2 storeys, 4 bays, the eastern-most bay added in C20. Exposed timbers
and brick infill, heavily restored along whole front,C20. Off-centre doorway with
C20 gabled porch with 6-panel door. To left, a 3-light casement, with a 2-light
casement beyond. To right a 3-light casement. Above, 2 gabled dormers, each with
a 3-light casement. All C20 casements. Interior: chamfered main beams and joists
in both main ground floor rooms. 2 former service rooms to west with crude joists
and straight-flight staircase in NW corner, all possibly an C18 addition. First
floor retains substantial timbers. Fireplace inserted in first floor room to west,
with date 1706 inscribed upon its lintel. Said to have a queen post roof, with evidence
of painted decoration on beams, which may show the building to be of earlier origin.
Substantial C20 additions to south and west. The house now forms part of the Old
Ship Inn.
