Railway goods shed. 1844, to a design by I.K. Brunel for the GWR. Built of brick with Bath stone
dressings and stone-coped Welsh slate roof with diagonally-set brick stack to office. Rectangular
plan. Tudor Revival details. Single storey, 3 bays. Two 4-centred arches to outer doorways on the
south elevation, the left-hand one forming a goods wagon entrance for a siding which extends
through the building; the gateway has full-height doors which are now clad with corrugated sheet;
to the right is a matching stone arch to original opening, infilled with brick; to centre is a small
single-storey lean-to office with stone pointed-arched window openings on the south and east
elevations; above in the gable of the main shed is a single window with stone surround. West
elevation faces the main line and has end pilasters, and 3 chamfered pointed-arched stone window
surrounds, each infilled with ashlar. North elevation has single-rail wagon gateway to right with
pointed-arched stone surround and full-height timber gates clad in corrugated sheeting; two lower
gabled structures have been removed. East elevation has full-height opening with brick pilasters to
either side and 2 sets of plank double doors in weatherboarded surround. Interior not inspected but
said to have retained original trusses. A complete example of a Brunel-design goods shed, dating
from the early years of railway development in this country.
