BIRMINGHAM BRISTOL ROAD SOUTH (OFF) SO 97 NE Former Medical Superintendant's 15/10032 House at Rubery Hill Hospital II Former Medical Superintendant's House,now Nursery school.Dated 1879,by Martin and Chamberlain of Birmingham for the Borough of Birmingham's Lunatic Asylums Committee of Visitors.Red brick with ashlar and terracotta dressings.Sidewall and ridge stacks with some moulded brickwork and clay pots.Barge-boarded gables,and plain tiled roof with crested clay ridges. Irregular plan with 'L' shaped front range at right angles to triple-gabled rear elevation.South elevation of 2 storeys above a basement,3 bays,with 'L'shaped porch to middle bay giving access to flight of steps leading to raised entrance.Porch has gabled timber superstructure on battered ashlar and brick piers,with pointed entry arch.Sidewall to stepped entry has a 6-light clerestorey below a plain tiled lean-to roof with small glazed dormer.Above porch gable,projecting breast of a sidewall chimney.To the west,a 4 over 4 pane ground floor sash window; above lean-to roof to centre bay, coupled 6-pane lights.Advanced gabled bay to east with coupled sash windows to ground floor above a blind basement.Frames have 12 panes to the upper sash and 2 below.First floor canted oriel carried on moulded timber brackets with sashes matching those to ground floor.Fish-scale tiled apron to gable forms roof to oriel below decorative cambered collar and yoke to gable apex.Further to east,steepll-pitched lean-to links with 5 bay corridor with entrance return at east end.Triple gabled north elevation with lean-to glazed porch to centre above copled stair windows.West elevation has gabled south bay with canted ashlar bay window.Coupled sashes above.Jettied apex to decorative gable incorporates timber nogging and ornamental terracotta.Interior retains many original panelled doors,turned baluster staircase,plaster cornice and encaustic-tiled entrance hall floor.
