Long block of shops and offices between Conduit Street and Maddox Street. c.1916 by
Henry Tanner but not completed until c.1924 by T.S. Darbyshire. Portland stone
ashlar facing, slate roof. 4 storeys (ground and 1st floor as podium), attic storey
and steep dormered mansard. Classical Beaux Arts style. Slightly asymmetrical
front, with recessed centre, the windows arranged in the rhythm 6:3:7 with bowed
corners and 4 windows returns. Ground and 1st cum mezzanine floors, with mid C.20
shop fronts, articulated by pilasters with engaged Doric columns carrying
entablature. Upper floors have architraved metal casement windows, those on 2nd
floor with alternate pairs of segmental and triangular pediments. Centred stone
dormer carried up from attic storey with large bracketed and pedimented keystone
crowned by helmeted mask. Cast iron balconettes to 2nd floor windows. Bronze ridge
cresting to roof with bronze shield motifs as terminal features to ridge.
