2.
James I stayed at this house in 1606 when it was used as a lodge. His coat of
arms with this date is painted in one of the bedrooms, now very faded. It is
a timber-framed and plastered house with exposed timber framing, which dates from
circa 1600. 2 storeys and attics. Originally it had cross wings at the north-east
and south-west ends. It was altered and restored in the C20, and the south-west
cross wing was demolished and a modern addition built in period style. The north-east
cross wing is plastered and jettied on the upper storey. The windows are casements
with leaded lights (C20). A gabled staircase wing projects at the rear. Roof
tiled, with a large central chimney stack with 4 diagonally set shafts on a rectangular
base. The interior has several features of interest including the wall painting
(coat of arms), a C17 panelled room and a painted door in the upper storey of
the main block. There is the remains of a moat. (RCHM 9).
