TQ 2980 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER ST. JAMES'S SQUARE, 82/32 SW1 5.2-70 No 33 (including Nos 31 and 32 Charles II Street) G.V. II* Terraced town mansion on corner site. 1770-72 by Robert Adam and retaining part of his interiors, with eastern extension/rebuilding along Charles II Street by Sir John Soane 1817-23, C.19 heightening, and alterations for club and offices in 1911 by Edmerton and Gabriel. Brown brick with 1911 stone facing to ground floor. Astylar facades. 3 storeys and (C.19) attic storey, basement and dormered mansard. 4 windows wide with 11-window return to Charles II Street (the 5 to east Soane's addition). 2-bay Ionic columned portico (1911) to right facing St. James's Square and 3 equally spaced and of same design but of 3 bays to Charles II Street. Recessed glazing bar sashes, those on upper floors under flat gauged arches. Continuous stone balustraded balcony to 1st floor carried over porticoes; guilloche plat band to 2nd floor, stone main cornice over 3rd floor and stone dentil cornice below parapet. Soane addition to the return has a 3 bay composition of narrow windows flanking a wide one, articulated by brick pilaster strips but otherwise respecting Adam's "ordonnance"; the end bay contains a high carriage-archway formerly giving access to the Bishop of London's stables behind No. 32. Cast iron area railings. Despite the alterations to the interior the principal Adam features of the 1st floor rooms are intact with fine delicate ceilings (3 authenticated by drawings in the Soane Museum) and friezes, doorcases, chimneypieces, the apsed end former dressing-room etc, but very little remains of Soane's work.
