II
House, c.1800 with early C19 rear wing; addition of 2nd floor probably
contemporary with west wing dated 1872. Squared stone with tooled-and-margined
dressings;Lakeland slate roof. 3 storeys, 3 bays, symmetrical. Raised quoins,
plinth, 1st and 2nd floor bands, moulded eaves cornice. 3 curved steps up to
central 6-panel door with Geometrical fanlight. Margined sash windows; all
openings in raised alternating-block surrounds. Hipped roof with 2 stepped-and-
corniced ridge stacks. Slightly set back to left 2-storey, l-bay west wing
with similar fenestration and datestone on left return. Set back to right
single-storey bay of 1948. 2-storey rear wing with 16- and 20-pane sash windows.

Originally a Coaching Inn on the Great North Road.

C20 extensions flanking north end of rear wing are not of special interest.
