Description

TQ 62 NE TICEHURST WARDSBROOK ROAD

4/8A Outbuilding 5 yards south
east of Wardsbrook Farmhouse

II

Outbuilding. C16. Timber-framed and weather-boarded with red and blue brick ground
floor to north. Plain tiled hipped roof. Entry to ground and first floors on
north side. 2 openings to north on first floor and 2 on ground floor, all with
diagonal mullions, probably not original. Interior: 3 bays. Queen-post side
purlin roof. Mostly gunstock-jowled posts, otherwise C18 rounded jowled posts.
Flooring of indeterminate age. Single red and blue brick kiln to north east with
conical plain tiled roof and no cowl and vane. Two kilns to south east, without
conical arts, are dated 1833 on brick. Considered by some to have been a detached
kitchen of C15 date, this would appear to be a barn built of reused materials,
converted into storage for an oasthouse in 1833.
