Two adjoining barns. The Minor Barn is probably C16, the Major Barn is circa late
C16 or early C17. Weatherboarded timber-frame on stone plinth. Corrugated iron
hipped roof. The Minor Barn (wing) has gable-ended roof: catslide roof over out-
shut at east end and over cattle shelter on south side. Plan: 2 barns adjoining at
right angles to each other. The larger late C16 or early C17. Major Barn is of
5 bays with a waggon way in the second bay from the left (east); the eastern bay
was formerly floored and partitioned off on the ground floor only and has a sepa-
rate doorway at the front (north). The westernmost bay was partitioned off at
the lower level from the rest of the barn. The earlier and smaller circa C16 Minor
Barn, attached at the right hand (west) end, projects forward (north) and is of
4 bays with a waggon bay in the second bay from the north. The southernmost bay is
floored, as it was originally, the ground floor partitioned off from the rest of the
barn was entered by a doorway at the south end of the west wall. Later additions
include an open-fronted cattle shelter in a lean-to at the rear (south) of the
Major Barn (this cattle shelter extends eastwards beyond the barn), and an outshut
at the left (east end of the Major Barn, probably a byre or stable. Exterior: The
north front has a full-height waggon entrance to the Major Barn on the left with
plank double doors and the Minor Barn projects on the right with full-height waggon
entrance on its inner face, also with plank double doors. At the left hand east
end a weatherboarded lean-to with a small plank door. On the right hand (west)
side of the Minor Barn a doorway to the right and a loft door above. At the rear
(south) there is an open-fronted cattle-shelter with a catslide roof supported
on timber posts with angle braces. Interior: large framed structure with tension
braces. The Major Barn has a common-rafter roof with queen-post trusses with arch
braces to the tie-beams, clasped purlins and wind-braces. The Minor Barn has a
crown-post roof with partition-type crown-posts each with one straight lateral
footbrace and one straight longitudinal headbrace. Source: The Rape of Hastings:
