Monument approx 250 metres
SW of Sandstone Lodge

Monument. Erected 1815 by Samuel Whitbread II to his gamekeeper Charles
Dines. Limestone. Fairly plain rectangular plinth standing about 1 metre
high, with inscription to W elevation. Inscription as follows:
Charles Dines
Gamekeeper to the late
Samuel Whitbread Esq
was basely attacked
on this spot by poachers
9th December 1815.
After receiving a mortal wound
he fired upon and wounded
several of his assailants
but lived not
to see them brought to justice.
This stone
is placed in remembrance
of a brave
and faithful servant
by W H Whitebread.
