Originally a large house of 1851 (deeds). Now semi-detached the rear
half as No 45 Melville Street. Tall three storeys on plinth, rough cast.
Low pitch hipped slate roof, overhanging eaves, frieze below. Vernon
Square front: three windows and one window wing to South. The centre
bay breaks forward slightly. First floor cornice. Windows are recessed,
sash, glazing bars intact, block sills. Central recessed door (No 11)
four panels, two glazed, narrow rectangular fanlight, plain surround.
Greek Doric porch, with fluted columns, enclosed with opening each side. with opening each side.
Frieze but no cornice as first floor above has been boxed in, glazed,
with colonettes at corners and dentil cornice. North front to Melville
Street is flanked by pilaster strips. Two windows, squat on second floor,
tall on other floors. No 11 Vernon Square has addition of superimposed
canted bays to ground and first floors, but No 45 Melville Street retains
original fenestration, recessed sash, glazing bars, block sills. Fine
anthemion balcony on brackets to first floor window. To West, originally
garden front, three windows. On the left hand a two storeyed wing projects
with a bowed end, articulated by giant pilasters with frieze cornice and
parapet, flat roof, Two windows to side. All windows with glazing bars
intact. The ground floor, adjoining wing, has an attractive conservatory
with panelled risers, seven lights and glazed door all with marginal glazing
arched at top and eight lights above with marginal glazing. To the South
of this front is a two storeyed wing with cornice and parapet, of one
window, in similar style, the ground floor brought forward in line with
conservatory, having a glazed door with fanlight.
