The Old Mill

A Grade II Listed Building in Boscastle, Cornwall

The Old Mill, Boscastle, Cornwall

Situated at the foot of the valley, where a bridge crosses the small river that flows through Boscastle, north Cornwall, is this old watermill which was once used for grinding corn. It had two overshot waterwheels, the second of which was removed in the 1960s.

The mill-house is possibly 18th century with the mill itself dating from the middle of the 19th century when Boscastle was a thriving little port. Around the early 20th century, after the mill was no longer in use, the building became a tea room and over the years housed a number of local craft stores. In 2013 the mill returned to the ownership of the Wellington Hotel. Many of the local craft and artisan tenants had left and the building was falling into disrepair. Following a major two-year renovation the Old Mill has been re-born. Many of the old floors and slates have been re-used to retain as much of the history of the building as possible. The building now contains two shops, three apartments and a meeting room.
