Railway tunnel portal. 1845 by Robert Stephenson for the Eastern Counties Railway.
Egyptian-style, yellow brick and stone. Upward-tapering brick facade, surmounted by
stone cornice and entablature. Tunnel mouth formed by semicircular stone arch, within
five concentric receding rings of brickwork, all springing from a rusticated stone
plinth at each side.
The tunnel was built in order to preserve the privacy of Audley End House.
