Estate farm complex. 1860 datestone over entrance. For E H Turton of Upsall Castle.
Coursed squared sandstone. Welsh slate roofs, some replaced in corrugated iron.
Gothic freestyle in part. Mainly single storey with 2 storey dovecote and storage
building and 3 storey granary. Laid out around 3 sides of a courtyard, the complex
comprises the following, an entrance range to the north including a gatehouse with
bell tower over, flanking looseboxes, a storage building to the west end, a granary
with pigeon loft and a barn, (gable end to front),at the east end; a west range of
stalls, looseboxes and dovecote; an east range of looseboxes; and a central yard with
low wall. Entrance range: symmetrical single storey range with gabled gatehouse with
pointed-arched wagon entrance; bargeboards and wrought iron finial to gable. Square
bell tower with short lancet windows and pyramidal roof surmounted by a weathervane.
Granary has pointed wagon door under a coat of arms, slit vents at lst floor level,
and a projecting 2nd floor band surmounted by a pointed arch blind arcade. Hipped
roof with triangular pigeon holes. Gable end of barn has 2 lancets surmounted by an
oculus. Storage building to west has a cart entrance, a lozenge inscribed EHT and a
2-light window with oculus above. Iron cresting to roof. West range: dovecote is
square on plan with chamfered windows, 1st floor band. Half-hipped roof with
fishscale tiles. Later cartshed adjoining north-west corner of entrance range not of
special interest.
