Description

WIDECOMBE-IN-
SX 67 NE THE-MOOR
1/149 Old clapper bridge about 150
- metres north-east of Lower Cator
Farmhouse
GV II

Clapper bridge over West Webburn river. Now disused. C17 or earlier. Granite.
Consists of a large, worn slab of stone (a clapper-stone) about 3 metres long and 1
metre wide, slightly cambered in the centre. In the middle of the bridge, running
lengthways, is a series of small shallow holes, possibly for a later boundary fence.
The bridge rests on a large, roughly-squared trestle-stone at either end. About 15
metres to the north-west is a later clapper bridge carrying the existing road to
Lower Cator Farmhouse; this is also listed.
