Two houses of different periods, originally one dwelling. The older part, No 24
is a 2 storey 2 bay timber framed building probably of C17 date with a brick skin
of late C18 or early C19 appearance; and a joint between the bays - the right bay
blank. Tiled roof. C19 lozenge-glazed casements. No 26 is of early-mid C18.
Two storeys, 2 bays with wings running back to form an inverted U-shape. Fairly
high pitched tiled roof half-hipped at left. Left part tile-hung. Right part
of coursed, galleted malmstone with red brick bands, quoins and dressings. A wide
front projection of modern date holds porch and square window bay supporting similar
1st floor bay. These are leaded large casements. Other windows early-Victorian
lozenge-glazed casements. Pretty gothick door. George Eliot is said to have lived
here while writing "Middlemarch".
