Wharf Master's House and Toll Office
at Manchester Road canal wharf
GV II
Wharf Master's house and attached toll office, now museum.
c1850. For Leeds-Liverpool Canal Company. Sandstone ashlar,
hipped stone slate roofs on 2 levels. Rectangular plan
parallel to the street, with the toll office forming a
projecting angled wing to the left.
EXTERIOR: each has a full basement storey at towpath level.
Otherwise, the house presents a 2-storey asymmetrical 2-window
facade to the street, with a 1st-floor sillband and paired
stone gutter brackets; a central doorway with a bracketed
cornice, triangular-headed lintel and recessed door with
square overlight; one window above the door and one on each
floor to the left (none to the right), all segmental-headed
with keystones and altered glazing; and corniced stone chimney
stacks on the left and right slopes of the roof (which is
gabled to the rear). Its 3-window right-hand return wall has 2
basement windows and a wide entrance to a through-passage at
the rear, and on each upper floor a large 2-light window
flanked by one-light windows, those to the left sashed but the
others altered. The left side wall has a flight of stone steps
up to the toll office.
The toll office is square except for a splayed rear left
corner, presents one storey to the street with a doorway to
the right, a window next to this (both detailed like those of
the house) and a front-wall chimney to the left; its left side
has one 4-pane sash on each floor, and another at ground floor
of the splayed corner; and the rear has a doorway at ground
floor, a 4-pane sash above this and a 1st-floor doorway to the
left (approached by the steps attached to the house).
INTERIOR not inspected.
Forms part of an important group at this wharf, including 3
warehouses attached to rear of house (qv), boundary wall to
yard (qv), stable block on east side of yard (qv), and with
Manchester Road Canal Bridge (qv).
