Formerly known as: Heeley Board school GLEADLESS ROAD. Nursery, junior and infant schools, caretaker's house and boundary walls, all adjoining. 1890 and 1897, with mid and late C20 alterations. By CJ Innocent. For the Sheffield School Board. Rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and gabled and hipped slate roofs with decorative ridge tiles and finials. Renaissance Revival style. PLAN: 3 main blocks, 1, 2 and 3 storeys, plus ancillary buildings, arranged at the corners of a rectangular site, enclosed and linked by a boundary wall with gateways. EXTERIOR: plinth, string courses, coped gables with ball finials. Windows are mainly glazing bar casements of various types. Single storey nursery school at west corner, dated 1890, has octagonal louvred wooden bell turret with ogee lead dome and finial, and a coped side wall stack. Double range plan. Playground front has a central gable with 3-light round-arched glazing bar window with hoodmould and shaped keystone. Above it, a triple ventilator. To right, a hipped lower projection with a central through-eaves dormer with shouldered gable and single casement, flanked to right by 2 small casements and to left by a double door. To its right, a 2-light casement with stone mullion, and above it, a pedimented dormer with a 3-light window. Beyond, to left, a 3-light casement with stone mullions, and above it, another dormer. To left, a single casement. Right gable has a round window, and above it, an ornamented datestone. Left gable has a graduated triple window and a parapeted porch with segment-headed door. 2 mid C20 single storey buildings link this block to the larger 2 storey block at the south corner. 2-storey rear elevation, to Gleadless Road, has single coped gable and side wall stacks and incorporates caretaker's house in the lower storey. Double through-eaves dormer with segment-headed windows, flanked to right by a double casement with stone mullion. Below, door with overlight flanked by a plain sash. To right, 2 plain sashes and to left, a double plain sash with stone mullion. To right, a projecting wing with 4-light round-headed window and above it, ornamented frieze with central cornice. To right again, 2 smaller gabled wings with 2-light casements with stone mullions. Left gable has 2 tall segment-headed casements flanking an external stack. South corner block, fronting Hartley Street, double range plan, has 2 octagonal domed cupolas and a coped ridge stack. Off-centre main gable with large round-arched window with keystone, and below, a 5-light window with stone mullions. To left, 2 casements and 2 gabled through-eaves dormers with single casements, the larger right one segment-headed. Below, 2 segment-headed casements, each flanked by single casements. To right, a through-eaves dormer with segment-headed casement, flanked by 3 casements to left and one to right. Below, 3 casements. Right gable has a keystone round window above, and 3 casements below. Left gable has graduated triple casement with segment-headed central light, and below, a segment-headed window and a single casement. To left, a canted 2 storey stair turret with panelled frieze and coped parapet, and two 2-light mullioned windows. Rear elevation has 2 through-eaves dormers with segment-headed windows, flanked by single casements. To left, a similar through-eaves dormer. Ground floor has gabled buttresses to each bay, and angle buttress to left. 6 round-arched openings, 2 to left blocked, 4 to right with windows. To right, a hipped 3 storey block with a double plain sash and above it, a through-eaves dormer with sash and ornamented gable. Below, a triple sash. To left, a casement with transom and toplight, and below, a projecting gabled porch with door, overlight and segment head with keystone. Left gable has round-arched window above, and similar blocked opening below. At the east corner, a single storey gabled toilet block enclosed by a wall with doorways on 2 sides. Junior school at north corner, 2 storeys plus basement, has a coped side wall stack set diagonally. Playground front has bays divided by buttresses. Main gable has round-arched 4-light window with keystone and voussoirs, and above it, a round-arched niche under a cornice. Below, 2 segment-headed casements with keystones. On either side, a triple bay with a central through-eaves dormer with segment-headed window, flanked by smaller casements. Below, 3 casements, the larger central one segment-headed. Below the left bay, a square headed basement opening flanked by round-arched openings and divided by small buttresses. To left, a single gable with round-arched 4-light window and below, 2 casements. Basement has a partly blocked round-arched window. Right gable has a round window. Right return has a projecting 2 storey hipped entrance bay with central through-eaves dormer and segment-headed window, flanked by 2 small casements. Below, a gabled porch with steps to a recessed segment-headed door flanked by 2 tall transomed casements. Above the door, 2 small windows. All these openings have a common cornice. Left return, to Anns Road, has bays defined by buttresses, and an octagonal bell turret. Central double bay with 2 through-eaves dormers and segment-headed windows, 2 segment-headed windows below, and 4 round-arched doors and windows to the basement, divided by smaller buttresses. Rear elevation has a gabled wing to left and a larger hipped 2-storey wing to its right, with a mid C20 flat-roofed 2-storey addition. INTERIOR not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: stone boundary wall has mainly a gabled stone coping. Anns Road side has 2 gateways and intermediate toilet block with coped wall. Rounded corners, with a lower section with chamfered ashlar coping and 2 rectangular gate piers with chamfered caps, opposite the caretaker's house. Hartley Road side has a rounded corner to left, and a pair of square gate piers with wrought-iron gate and short lengths of flanking railing. Plainer gateway to right. HISTORICAL NOTE: CJ Innocent was architect and surveyor to the Sheffield School Board 1871-1880, and designed many of the early board schools in conjunction with T Brown, who died in 1881. Innocent continued to design schools and additions, of which this building is a particularly large and complete example. (Researches by G Hague, Sheffield City Council).
