Chapel at Northern Cemetery
II
Cemetery chapel. 1900. Rockfaced stone with ashlar dressings
and slate roofs. Gothic Revival style. Plinth, buttresses,
coped gables.
PLAN: nave and chancel, with vestry, external south aisle,
south-west tower and spire, and west porch.
EXTERIOR: chancel, single bay, has a traceried pointed arched
east window, 5-lights. Vestry, to south, has a flat-headed
window, 3-lights, to north, and a single lancet and pointed
arched door to east. Nave, 3 bays, has to north a
segment-arched doorway flanked by flat-headed traceried
windows, 3-lights. West end has a truncated pointed arched
window, 5-lights. South aisle, 3 bays, has coped parapet.
Central segment-arched doorway flanked by buttresses, and
beyond, 3-light windows, also segment-headed. Square
south-west tower, 3 stages, has angle buttresses and an
octagonal broach spire with 4 gabled lucarnes. To south and
west, pointed arched doorways. above, slit lights on each
side. Bell stage has a pointed arched triple bell opening on
each side. West porch has angle buttresses and coped parapet.
To west, a central doorway flanked by single windows, all
segment-headed. To north, a similar doorway.
INTERIOR: brick with ashlar bands and dressings, has common
rafter roofs on corbels. Chancel has a keel moulded arch with
double shafts and hood mould, and pointed arched door to
south. Nave has segment-headed double doors to north, south
and west, and patterned stained glass windows.
Fittings include original choir stalls and clergy desk.
