Arkwright's first mill at Cromford was originally five storeys high and 11 bays long, its width determined by the size of the largest beams which could be obtained. This building housed the spinning frames, later known as water frames. The original mill building, reduced to 3 storeys by a fire in 1929 is on the left. The extension to the mill of 1785 can be distinguished to the right of the downpipe by the different stone facing.
