SK 53 NW BEESTON AND STAPLEFORD BROADGATE

2/45A No. 72, Broadgate House

House now Headquarters of The East Midlands Universities Air Squadron c1840
altered and extended c1855, for Edward J.Lowe. Brick and painted stucco. Slate
roofs, with 2 external stacks. Rendered plinth and moulded cornice and parapet.
North west front has off-centre blocked doorway, with remaining fanlight flanked
by single glazing bar sashes, above 3 similar sashes. To the right an added,
projecting 2 storey canted bay window, with glazing bar sashes. South-west
front has projecting central square tower which rises to 3 storeys, with doorway
with double 3 panel doors and a flat hood supported on brackets. Above a single
glazing bar sash, and above again a smaller glazing bar sash. This tower was
added for E J Lowe, as a rooftop observatory. Interior contains single flight
return staircase with ornate iron balustrade.
