2 terraced houses converted to a college of music. Houses c1875; converted c1921-22 with a new portico and purpose built rooms by Cheadle and Harding. Red brick with stone dressings and quoins and chanelled ashlar ground floor. Slated mansard roofs with dormers; roof at angle steeply pitched in French style with cast iron cresting and elaborate dormers. 4 storeys, attics and basement, 6 windows; then 5 storeys 2 windows to right hand angle which is canted with a single window to each floor; return with blind bay and bay with 3-light canted bay window. Asymmetrically positioned 2-storey tetrastyle in antis portico of engaged Ionic columns with "Trinity College of Music" in frieze and central projecting pedimented porch having enriched architrave to entrance with Greek key patterned over panel and rounded with lyre. and swag enrichment to the frieze. Columns flank architraved sashes with keystones on ground floor and casements with wrought iron balconies on first floor. Segmental arched ground floor windows. Upper windows architraved; first floor with cornices and continuous cast iron balcony (stone on return); second floor, architraved sashes with cornices and open patterned stone window guards linked by a band; third floor to right with stone aprons. Stone band at third floor level. Projecting bracketed cornice surmounted by a stone balustrade; cornice continues at fifth floor level on right hand bays. Interiors of interesting high quality decoration and fittings. Entrance hall with oak paired fluted Aeolic columns supporting a plaster entablature the frieze of which rests on the capitals whilst the architrave passes behind; carved wood entrance doorcase surmounted by figure of Pan. Arches with moulded plaster masks and stairs flanked by pilasters with bird capitals. Oak panelled stair with turned balusters to upper flights. Ground floor library in mid Georgian style with well executed Kenhan doorcases. Principal first floor rooms, the concert hall and boardroom in semi-Grecian, semi-Adam style. Boardroom with well executed frieze and cornice; chimney piece repeats Greek revival tone of ground floor with anthemian frieze and pilaster capitals; good marble fireplace. Adam style plaster ceiling. Concert hall panelled in oak to frieze height with fluted pilasters. Plaster ceiling of Adam - derived rosettes set within broad plain bands. Organ with carved oak case. Window fanlights contain stained glass coats of arms of past presidents of the college by A K Nicholson. Other Nicholson glass of interest is in the west windows along the staircase and in the former library. Panels depict John Fornsete (composer of the earliest known written piece of music in England), Geoffrey chancer Shakespeare, Samuel Pepys (this panel contains a picture of the building in the right hand corner) and Henry Purcell. Medallion portraits of Byrd, Gibbons, Lawes, Arne, Sullivan and Edgar. The glass represents the connection between literature and music and is of considerable interest as declarations of period of muscial taste.
