Description

TL61 NW GREAT CANFIELD BACON END GREEN

3/3 HOBBS FARMHOUSE

GV II

Hall house, medieval, extended in early C19, altered in late C19.
Timber-framed, plastered, roofs partly tiled, partly slated. 3-bay block
aligned N-S with axial chimney stack at S end, 2-bay crosswing to the S,
jettied to the E, early C19 extension further S. C19 external chimney stacks
on N and S walls. 2 storeys. 3 late C19 bay windows, of which the middle
one is below the jetty, and late C19 gabled porch. First floor, 4 early C19
16-light sash windows. Roof of early C19 S extension of shallow pitch,
hipped and slated, others gabled and tiled. Access refused in December 1982.
In plan this is a typical medieval hall house, but without internal inspection
it is impossible to know whether the walls of the hall have been raised to
their present height, or whether the hall block has been rebuilt, as was
common circa 1600 and later. RCHM II.
