Mausoleum of Sophie Beard

GV II

Mausoleum in form of a Gothic chapel. Sophie Beard died 1850,
chapel somewhat later; architect unknown. Portland stone.
Gothic style. Rectangular plan. 3 buttressed bays with pitched
stone roof having decorated cross finials. Central pointed
arch entrance with hood mould and having recessed moulding and
colonettes; plank door with elaborate wrought iron scroll
pattern hinges and decorative ironwork. Flanking the entrance,
cusped recesses with shaped hood moulds containing sculpture
statuettes of Faith and Hope; inscribed beneath "Erected as a
last testament of love" and "To the memory of a perfect wife
and mother". -Above the entrance a trefoil light with shaped
hood mould. Trefoil lights on the rear elevation have original
stained glass.
