Description

SE 35 NW SCRIVEN MARKET FLAT LANE
(north side, off)

5/73 Former Dog Kennels with
yard wall on south side

- II

Former dog-kennels and yard wall, now outbuilding. Late C18. Coursed
squared pink gritstone, pantile roof with eaves course of stone slates to
kennel. Single-storey 4-bay range with added 2-storey bay to rear of bay 2,
the yard wall to front is approximately 2.5 metres high. Original doorway
bay 1, obscured by lean-to yard shelter, in Gothick arch with interlaced
glazing bars to overlight. Similar pointed chamfered surrounds with imposts
to windows in bays 2, 3 and 4, bays 2 and 3 having remains of original
interlaced glazing bars. Inserted doorways with single block lintels
between bays 3 and 4 and far right. Brick ridge stack between bays 3 and 4.
The yard wall has a doorway with large lintel, probably inserted, to right
of centre, and chamfered copings. Interior: bay 4 contains a set pot and
flue against the left wall, and a built-in cupboard in the end wall. The
kennels were probably built by the Slingsby family of Scriven Park who kept
the locally famous pack of fox hounds. The building appears to have
contained a bothy for the keeper in the right end. The 2-storey bay was
added at the rear in the C19, possibly when the range was converted to other
uses; lean-to shelters were also built on the inside walls of the yard. The
building was derelict at time of resurvey.
