1885. A large deep red brick brewery on corner site with Northgate Street
qv. 6 storeys with gabled centre and lower 4 storey gabled section to right.
2 storeyed gabled extension of front to right hand. The corner is curved
and there are 3 and 2 storey extensions for 9 bays along Northgate Street.
Gables are low pitched with cut brick copings giving bargeboard effect. Bull's
eye window in centre gable, trefoil light to gable of 4 storey right hand
section and a bull's eye again in the gable of the 2 storey extension. Sill
courses to each floor. Recessed iron frame pivot casements, cambered brick
arches.
The main entrance reaches up to 2nd floor level occupying the width of the
central gabled section. Rusticated raised brick surround to elliptical archway
with keystone.
The corner block with Northgate Street has a hipped slate roof with raised
platform, ornate cast iron balustrade, weathervanes at corner. A very tall
square brick chimney rises from yard above roof line with cornice head and
triglyph frieze. Dominating position closing perspective from the Market
Place.
