STOCKLEIGH POMEROY STOCKLEIGH POMEROY SS 80 SE 10/242 - Church Cottage and West View GV II

Church house, divided into 2 cottages, used as almshouse in C19. Circa early C16, remodelled in C19. Rendered and painted cob walls. Dry slate and asbestos slate roof with slightly projecting eaves and verges and brick chimneys over gable ends. 3 rooms originally with larger central room (hall). The hall was heated by a lateral stack on the rear wall and the end rooms had fireplaces on the gable end walls. Inserted stack and stairs are in hall of left-hand dwelling (Church Cottage). 2 storeys. Irregular 3-window south-west front. House, left, has nearly central doorway with 6-panel door and C20 Doric porch. C20 12-pane 2-light casement in tall opening, left. C20 12-pane 2-light casements to first floor. 3-light leaded casement survives to first floor of gable end, left. Cottage, right, (West View) has doorway, left and window within C20 open lean-to porch; further window to right of porch and window to 1st floor centrally over porch. Windows are 12-pane 2- light casements with wider central lights. Interior: plank and muntin screen in Church Cottage at left side of original hall, with chamfered muntins on hall side and central doorway with cranked head with carved spandrels, and heavy chamfered head beam. Said to be remains of screen at opposite end of hall, now covered up, in West View. In Church Cottage, in former hall, 2 large axial ceiling beams with deep chamfers with large step stops. Roof has 3 probably jointed crucked trusses morticed and side pegged at apices and with morticed and side pegged cranked collars which are chamfered on upper and lower edges with run out stops. The apex is cut for diagonal ridge which is missing and the blades are trenched for 3 tiers of purlins which are missing except for lower purlins and middle purlin at front. The rafters are also missing. The roof timbers are entirely clean and have remains of lime-wash. Important as a surviving Church house. Good quality C16 features probably hidden.
