north of stables to
Sawley Hall
GV II
Horse engine house ('gin gang'). Mid C19. Coursed gritstone rubble, blue
slate roof. 2 x 1 bays. West front: left bay open, straight joint left of
centre, cart entrance right with timber lintel under eaves. Rear (east
side): cart entrance left. Left return attached to barn south wall (barn
not of special interest). Right return: central board door with large
lintel, gable coping. Interior: a curved wall with 2 ventilation openings
divides the 2 bays and defines a semicircular end to the north bay, where
the wheel is housed. Framing survives, supported below large cross beams,
the wheel having 6 wooden collars for horses. Roof: 3 queen-strut trusses,
marked I, II, and III and strengthened with iron bolts. The machinery
linking with the barn has been removed and the gearing is now linked through
to the south bay. The engine house is said to have been used for pumping
the water supply to Sawley Hall (qv) in the early C20.
