Original premises of 1912 above modern ground floor. Corner site with Wine
Street qv. Florid stucco faced building of 3 storeys. Banded rustication
to piers flanking St John's Street front and to those articulating Wine Street
front. The corner is rounded with scalloped copper dome crowned by domed
lantern. Heavy cornice breaking forward over piers and with modillions and
large egg and dart moulding on corner. Parapet with flanking pilasters and
stepped coping. 2 windows to St John's Street, 3 to Wine Street, recessed
in architrave surrounds on 2nd floor, stepped down at top with straight wreath
moulding. Moulded sills with shaped aprons decorated with winged cherubs
heads. 1st floor windows segment headed, tripartite and transomed with corkscrew
colonettes flanking arched centre light, dentil transom carried over.
On corner 2 narrow 2nd floor windows similar to others but with festoon at
top. In between a floral ribbon surround to date. Between storeys an elaborate
cartouche with inscription: "Boots Corner". The 1st floor corner window in
architrave surround with wreath moulding.
The piers bear the unusual feature of large heads set in wreathed circular
recesses with beribboned name plaques below. They portray famous people or
Royalty associated with Devizes in the past. To St John's Street: Roger,
Bishop of Sarum and Matilda. To Wine Street: Hubert de Burgh, Edward I, Ralph
Hopton and Sir Thomas Lawrence. Curiosity value.
