ST 96 NE CALNE WITHOUT BOWOOD

GV II

Picturesque cottage, possibly c1760 but in picturesque style
associated with the early C19. Squared ironstone rubble with
ashlar dressings, stone slate eaves roof and end stacks, one with
paired brick octagonal shafts. Two storeys and attic, 2-window
range of stone mullion windows with hoodmoulds and cast-iron
lattice glazing. Front to lake has 2-light and 3-light above, 2-
light and 1-3-1-light canted bay below. Brick fronted single
storey section to left has similar 2-light to front and end wall
bread-oven. North end wall has ornate barge boarding, 2-light to
first floor right and ground floor stone-slate lean-to verandah on
painted square timber posts, 2 bays and third, to right, advanced
with gable in front of door. Cottage is marked on maps of 1770s
after the formation of the lake by Capability Brown.
