ST 96 NE CALNE WITHOUT BOWOOD

5/27 Home Farmhouse

Bowood estate farmhouse, early C19, squared rubble stone with stone
slate eaves roof and stacks, each of 5 octagonal shafts. Two
storeys, double pile plan, picturesque Tudor detail. Large stone
mullion windows with hoodmoulds and leaded lights, upper windows
under shallow coped and shouldered eaves gables with shield
plaques, 3-light to each floor left, 3-light to first floor right
over 1-3-1-light canted bay. Central gabled ashlar porch with
shield plaque and depressed arches on 3 sides. Rear has two 3-
light windows with hoodmoulds to each floor and central door.
Gabled extensions each end, south extension with 2-light ovolo-
moulded mullion window to front. North extension with 2-light
ovolo-moulded upper window over two 2-lights with hoodmoulds,
mouldings as on main house. A house is marked on the site from the
1760s, called the Lodge on 1763 map.
