ST 97 SE CALNE WITHOUT BOWOOD

2/30 Queenwood

Bowood estate house, early C19, squared rubble stone with stone
slate eaves roof and ornate end stacks, 2 octagonal shafts to east,
2 spiral shafts to west. Two storeys, picturesque Tudor style with
stone mullion windows and cast-iron small-paned casements. South
front has later projecting wing to right, 3-light upper windows to
centre and left under shallow coped and shouldered gables. Centre
Tudor-arched doorway with altered hoodmould in projecting porch, 1-
3-1-light canted bay to left. Wing to right has quatrefoil plaque
over 3-light mullion windows to first and ground floors with
hoodmoulds. South side wall stack with 2 octagonal shafts. To
left of main range slightly lower range with large outside stack
and 2 octagonal shafts to left of gabled dormer with 2-light window
over ground floor 3-light with hoodmould. Entrance front of main
range has 3 similar shallow coped and shouldered gables over 2-
light, 2-light and 3-light windows. Ground floor 2-light with
hood, central ashlar gabled porch and added lean-to to right with
5-light window, the original 3-light with hoodmould visible
within. Lean-to continues in front of range to right with timber
gabled porch. Gabled eaves dormer above with 2-light mullion
window. A rubble stone fronted single storey annex with hipped
roof is linked at right angles to north-west corner. A house
called Shadwells is marked on the site on J. Powell map of 1763.
