GV II


Country house, now divided into flats. First built circa 1740 by the Fox family
remodelled or rebuilt circa early-mid C19. Stucco. Scantle slate roofs with gable
or pedimented ends and polygonal over canted bays to front. Axial chimneys with
cornices over cross walls. Cast iron ogee gutters forming eaves cornice. Triple
span arrangement of roofs plus cross roofs behind canted bays.
Plan: side entrance to central stair hall which separates the 3 principal rooms to
right which face the gardens and the service rooms to the left.
2 storeys. Symmetrical 3:2:3 bay south east garden front. Central 2-window flat
bays flanked by projecting 3-window canted bays. Symmetry now broken by French
windows replacing sash to fifth bay. Replacement horned sashes with glazing bars;
ground floor openings taller. South west entrance front has 1-window pedimented
gable end, set back to left, roughly central projecting pedimented 2-window gable end
with pedimented porch central to front, and 1-window side wall of south east front on
right. Original 12-pane hornless sashes. Pediments have moulded cornices and porch
with doorway within recess between piers, has moulded cornice below pediment with
plain frieze between.
Interior not inspected except for stair hall and porch. Stair is open-well, open-
string with shaped tread ends, wreathed over newel handrail and turned balusters.
Ceiling has moulded cornice and band. Slate flags to porch floor.
A large house set in good grounds overlooking the beautiful Kennal Valley.
